Testimonials

I have been honored with the opportunity to participate in the leadership program.  I cannot express to you how grateful I am for this opportunity.  I have learned so much about myself. The speakers that were amazing individuals that provide great insight into the topic they are discussing, and the risk analysis project was a great way to apply my insurance knowledge and newly gained leadership and communication knowledge in a real world situation.

Dale Fitzgibbons started the program out well with his discussion on communication.  I had always known that communication was important, but I had never understood the extent of its importance.  Dale explained that it was the basis of any relationship.  He gave specific examples on how poor communication can lead to tension, and later frustration.  He also gave counter examples on how good communication can lead to discussing issues before they become problems.  As I thought back to all my experiences with group work, I could see how a lack of communication had caused all of our inner-group problems. I could also see how better communication could have lead to a more effective group.  I now see the importance of good communication.  Not only have a learned the importance of communication, but I have learned how to effectively communicate.

I learned a lot from observing Dr. Lippert?s and Dr. Hunt?s presentation.  I observed how they were captivating when they spoke, how they commanded the attention of their audience.  I also observed how they were both very positive. They thanked us for giving our speeches and being there on a Saturday.  It made me feel good that I was there, that I participated, and that I gave a
speech. They were a great example of how using communication effectively is an important skill for a leader.  Not only were there presentations on communication, but all aspects of the business world.

Chris DiDomizio gave a great presentation on interviewing skills.  Chris had talked to us about the key to answering interview questions is getting only one main point across.  I have given good interviews before, but I would not have been so poised, confident, and convincing if it were not for Chris? interview presentation.  His presentation gave me the skills to land a very important internship in Hartford, CT, which has just recently turned into a full time
job.

As an actuary major, I did not get a lot of formal training in the other aspects and details of insurance.  The only required insurance class we have to take is ?Intro to Insurance,? FIL 250.  The project in the second semester showed me what a policy really looks like.  How they are written and altered to meet each businesses needs.  It also showed me how complicated coverage is, and how easy it is for there to be mistakes or errors in coverage.  This really surprised me.  I also was shown in a specific application setting what each of the policies do.  I?m sure this will be very beneficial for me when I have actuarial projects that work with these products.

I am forever grateful for the opportunities that the Katie School has allowed me in my four years at ISU.  It has helped me to become a successful Senior, ready and looking forward to my future career.
