Great Start !!

bowling 2009

This year, 17 students from various regions far and near came to ISU to participate in this camp. All students seem very energetic and ready to learn. Many were quite knowledgeable about the insurance industry and how it works and even about actuarial science and its place in the industry.

Sunday was great; students made new friends quickly and the icebreaker activity in the afternoon and bowling in the evening served as a great way to know each other better.  The icebreaker activity brought to light many interesting tidbits including the fact that one student almost died in a paper-mâché incident, another student has a $10,000 drum set and one of our counselors is a professional cricket player.

Carina (from Arlington Height, IL) , was the bowling all-star with the highest score of 180- besides Katie School Director , Mr. Jim Jones who bowled a little higher.  Students really enjoyed playing golf as well.

The evening did not go without capturing a few amusing memories though: Patrick broke a nail during bowling and Amanda had a slight ‘mishap’ at hole 13 in golf.

Overall, the Challenge seems to be off to a great start.

Way to go guys!!

Introducing Dr. Kevin Ahlgrim

Dr. Kevin Ahlgrim is a professor of finance and insurance at Illinois State and has also taught at Bradley University and the University of Illinois. While originally from a southwest suburb of Chicago, he has spent most of his adult life roaming the cornfields of central Illinois, including those near Champaign, Peoria, and now Bloomington-Normal. Prior to his teaching career, he has worked as a health actuary in Connecticut and Chicago.

Some of his time consuming hobbies include golf, running, and cooking. He and his wife Theresa have two daughters, ages 8 and 6 who always want to go to water parks and on roller coasters. Given his long-term struggles beating Lou on "Guitar Hero III", Kevin has recently made the transition to a real guitar and is currently attempting to make recognizable music.
