The Competitive Edge

sleaderWhy is the insurance industry in Illinois and throughout the nation involved in Illinois State University's program of excellence in insurance and risk management? Because the Katie School of Insurance and Financial Services has the competitive edge!

  • The Katie School Student Leadership Program focuses on further development of communication, team building, leadership, and business consulting skills. A team risk management project to benefit local non-profit organizations constitutes the final project.
  • An internship program provides student placements with various insurance companies, brokerages, agencies, risk managers and destinations in the international insurance markets each summer in London, Bermuda, and Zurich.
  • Scholarships totaling over $100,000 are awarded each year to outstanding students.
  • Graduates of the insurance program already have made a commitment to the industry, thereby reducing the costs associated with entry-level employment and turnover.
  • Insurance companies, agencies, and brokerages are able to hire graduates from the program who are well-trained, knowledgeable about the insurance business, and ready to progress rapidly on the job.
  • Students participate in industry activities outside of the classroom, many sponsored by the professional student insurance fraternity, Gamma Iota Sigma, that help augment the formal insurance curriculum and maximize their involvement with the industry.
  • The Actuarial Science program is one of the fastest growing in the country producing graduates with multiple passes exams and very strong credentials.
  • Tenured insurance and business faculty teach undergraduate classes and are accessible to students for career advisement and personal development guidance.
  • Guest industry speakers bring firsthand knowledge and experience to the classroom to complement the superior teaching by faculty members.
  • A nationally recognized program in professional selling and sales management gives insurance students a competitive edge when they enter the profession.
  • The top national insurance organizations rate the Katie School among the best collegiate programs in the United States.
  • The program is accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
